Did you know Tien Kue is a play on words for ‘Thank you’?!
Tien Kue Inn opened its doors in the winter of 1959 and gained immediate popularity. It made headlines in both the Hamilton Spectator and the Burlington Gazette, announcing to readers that a new Chinese restaurant opened by the Skyway. Its impressive size could accommodate roughly 220 guests, with separate rooms available for private functions. Many people have shared celebrating important events with their friends and family here.
The area was strategic being close to the highway; travellers were able to stretch their legs and enjoy a delicious meal. Tien Kue Inn opened at a time where Burlington’s population was rapidly growing, too. People were interested in trying new cuisines, and its popularity was soaring as line ups were usually out the door. Their extensive menu ranged from Chinese fine dining to Canadian favourites such as steak and roasted vegetables.
The Tien Kue was a successful franchise in the Greater Toronto Area, spearheaded by four cousins who had experience running restaurant businesses—Jack Lee, Danny Lee, Nelson Lee, and George Wong. The restaurant in Burlington was run by Bill Lee, Bing Chow, and Danny Lee. Tien Kue tells the story of one of the earliest Chinese families working in the Burlington area. The family supported other Chinese immigrants by offering staff housing, and employees were allowed to stay until they were comfortable enough to stand on their own.
