Privacy Policy

Purpose

The Museums of Burlington (“MoB”) is committed to respecting individuals’ right to privacy as well as maintaining the accuracy, confidentiality and security of personal information in its custody. This policy sets out the MoB commitment to follow federal and provincial legislation for the collection, use, disclosure and security of personal information whether booking a program or event, making a donation, or browsing the website.

Scope

This policy applies to all personal information provided to the MoB in writing, electronically or verbally.

Policy Statement

In the course of collecting personal information to conduct business, the MOB will comply with the provisions set out in the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) and Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).

The MoB will not sell, lend or rent, nor distribute or disclose personal information to any outside company or organization.

The MoB does not reveal specific information about users or other personally identifiable data to unaffiliated third parties for their independent use, except if lawfully required to do so, or unless the MOB has an individual’s prior written consent.

The MoB assumes no responsibility for the websites that are linked to, hosted by or otherwise electronically connected to the MoB website or webserver.

The MoB may change this policy at any time at its sole discretion.

Collection of Information

Some information provided to the MoB for various reasons (i.e. making a booking or submitting a donation) will contain information that personally identifies individuals. This information may include; names, email address, home address, credit cards and phone numbers. The MoB will clearly state the purpose for collecting such information before it is collected and will obtain consent for that use. This information may be collected via a variety of methods; phone, email, online or in person. When personal information is collected, the MoB may provide notice outlining;

  • The legal authority to collect personal information
  • The primary purpose for collecting the personal information
  • How the information will be used
  • Who to contact if there are questions about this collection
Information Gathered From use of the Website

The MoB may also collect information from individuals browsing the website or connecting to MoB wireless guest internet access. In this case, information such as one’s country, internet protocol (“IP”) address and other characteristics about one’s system or device may be automatically collected. This information may be collected for functional and statistical purposes as well as to improve the website experience.

Use of Information

Personal information shall not be shared, used or disclosed for purposes other than for which it was collected, except with the consent of the individual or as required by law. Should individuals consent to provide personal information it will primarily be used for the following;

  • To provide information about tickets, events, programs, memberships, camps and donations
  • To thank supporters, fulfill member and donor benefits and issue tax receipts
  • To invite supporters to special events
  • To sell memberships, ticket sales, and for fundraising
  • For service phone calls and emails
  • For audit purposes
Disclosure of Information

MoB takes its obligations with respect to the use and disclosure of personal information very seriously. MoB will only use personal information for the primary purpose for which it was collected. Access is limited to only those MoB employees who require access to perform their assigned duties. Employees are regularly instructed in their responsibilities in protecting personal information and privacy.

Email Communications

If individuals agree to be contacted by the MoB through regular mail and/or via email, the MoB may make contact from time to time to:

  • Send information about product(s) purchased
  • Notification of special promotional offers, special events or upcoming exhibitions
  • Inquire about satisfaction and needs with regards to the MoB’s products and services via surveys, etc

In all forms from which the MOB collects contact information, these individuals will be asked permission to receive updates from the MoB. The MoB will only use this information for the stated purpose.

The MOB will not share individual e-mail addresses with anyone outside the MoB nor use email addresses for any purpose other than for the reason it was collected unless with prior permission.

The MoB is also committed to making sure patrons do not receive more than a reasonable number of letters, emails or phone calls.

Storage & Security of Information

Personal information is stored on a secure server, in hard copy files and remotely with password-protected services such as VPN access, Checkfront, MailChimp and Eventbrite. Only authorized MoB personnel have access to this information. Furthermore, the MOB will ensure that staff are trained on this Visitor Privacy Policy and is enforced by all staff members.

Accountability

Should there be any errors in correspondence(s) or if personal information changes, please email museuminfo@burlington.ca or call 905.332.9888 to update the file.

If individuals do not wish to be contacted by phone, mail or email, please contact us and we will ensure that the request is honoured.

Terms and Conditions

By accessing and using the MoB website, you unconditionally agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree to these Terms and Conditions, do not access or use the MoB website. All users agree to be bound by any and all revisions and should periodically revisit these Terms and Conditions to review the current Terms.
